I was born in Gainesboro, Tennessee (Jackson County), to Roscoe Mayberry and the late Ava Avannah Mayberry, also Jackson County natives. I have two brothers, Donnie and Ronnie, and one sister, Angel.
I was raised in Michigan, where, as a young girl, I was encouraged by my dad to play a musical instrument. He first offered to buy me an accordion, but it was bigger than I was. I said, "no thanks," of course. Next, he gave me piano lessons, but that only lasted about a week. Finally, he asked me, "What instrument would you like to play?" And my answer was "the guitar."
Then, we traveled to Dayton, Ohio for a three-day weekend, and there Dad promised to buy me a guitar if I learned two songs and all the chords. I took the deal.
I spent the rest of that vacation in my cousin's room, learning the chords and rhythms thanks, in part, to my cousin, Brenda Gentry, who wrote down the chords and two songs for me: "Down in the Valley" and "Hang Down Your Head, Tom Dooley." Thanks for all her time and patience to help fulfill my dad's dreams and also mine, and I am now playing the instrument that I love.
When I played the two songs I'd just learned to my dad, he was true to his word, as always. "When we get back to Michigan," he said, "I'll buy you that guitar." And once we got home, sure enough, he bought me a Slivertone guitar. It cost eight dollars.
I began to play music with my cousins, including Clyde Loftis, on the weekends. Clyde taught me how to make the c/f/e and the b chords. I came to love playing and singing so much that, in 1977, I started a little gospel group called "The Gospel Travelers," and became the lead singer.
Over the years, I came to sing with other groups, including "The Southern Rainbows" and "The Sounds of Grass," a bluegrass group. The last group I sang with was "The Ambassadors," comprised of James Mayberry, Scott Gilliam, John Mabry, Charles Mayberry, and Shannon Wilson. We lost our lead singer, James Mayberry, in July 2002. He went home to be with the Lord, whom he loved to sing about most. To this day, he is missed very much.
I married Jimmy Haney in March of 1969, and we now have three daughters: Shelia, Kimberly, and Suzanne. We also have one grandchild, Ashlyn, who is her "gran's" biggest fan. My dad remarried on September 15, 1989, to a wonderful woman who I now call mom, Lottie Louise Mayberry.
I would like to thank my family and friends for all their love and support. I look forward to recording, in the near future, some original songs I have written. Keep visiting my website for upcoming events, as I will keep them posted.

I remember loving the holidays as a child, Thanksgiving and Christmas was the best times of year. My mother and grandmother enjoyed cooking and sharing recipes. Naturally, I wanted to help; I would put the icing on the cakes, and set the table. My dad helped with some of the cooking, he’s a great cook too! When all of our loved ones had arrived dad would carve the turkey. Everything was wonderful!
My mother and grandmother have gone on to be with the Lord. But their memories and the aroma’s of Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner have not been forgotten.
In memory of my mom, grandmother, Aunt’s, Cousins, and other family and friends, I decided to create a Mother - Daughter Cookbook. I called up my family on my mother’s side and asked them to send me some recipes. Some of them were very grateful to learn about my new cookbook. I also called up some of my friends, and they sent me some of their recipes. My daughter Shelia and my granddaughter Ashlyn also have recipes in this cookbook.
Here is a recipe from Ashlyn.
It is her Great-Great-Grandmother Ruth Lovel Ballard’s
Chocolate Gravy Recipe
- 1 heaping Tbsp. - cocoa
- 2 heaping Tbsp. - self rising flour
- ½ cup - sugar
- Mix together above ingredients until brown with no lumps.
- Boil 2 cups water – pour half of the water over cocoa mixture, then blend out lumps with spoon and pour this mixture back into remaining boiling water.
- Simmer and stir constantly until thick; pour over biscuits!
If you love to cook, I know you will enjoy this cookbook. It has over 200 recipes!
